The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
