Democrats Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials expressed anger after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and stated they should be taken into custody and sentenced "with execution" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Message That Sparked the Debate
The clip, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who previously served in defense or intelligence roles.
"Like us, you all took an pledge to defend and defend this national charter," the officials affirmed in the brief video. "Currently, the dangers to our governing document are not only from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can refuse improper directives, you can decline improper directives, you must reject improper directives. No one has to carry out commands that violate the law or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Angry Reply
The recorded statement appeared to prompt a heated response from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he declared: "This is really serious, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership published a joint statement censuring the remarks.
"Violent politics has no role in this nation," they wrote. "Congress members who participated in the video all worked our country with exceptional national pride and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and harmful calls for execution against members of Congress, and urge Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in contact with protective services "to ensure the security of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these extreme online messages and recant his violent language before he causes harm," the announcement continued.
Representatives' Firm Reaction
The representatives who appeared in the video also published a statement.
"We are veterans and security experts who care for this United States and took an oath to protect and defend the national charter of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge is permanent, and we aim to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that sacred responsibility."
"The significant point is that the former president considers it liable to punishment by execution for us to restate the statutes," they continued. "Our service members should know that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the national charter and obligation to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "All citizens must come together and denounce the president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a period for ethical certainty."
Further Political Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and posted on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is requesting the death of public representatives."
He continued: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this right away and unconditionally."
The Conservative official supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", labeling the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have important representatives of the legislature instructing military personnel to ignore directives, I think that's unprecedented in American history."
The Republican leader also according to sources stated to the press that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to analyze the wording and determine all that."
White House Statement
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Is the president want to kill members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the official stated. "You have sitting members of the federal government who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to individuals of the national defense, to active duty service members advising them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She added: "The purity of our armed forces rests on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can result in fatalities, it can result in confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally promoting."
