Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 individuals were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
