Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD released surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
