Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.

A Major Signing for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

Securing the German international comes at a time when United appear to be building positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
