Multiple Hurt as In-Flight Disturbance Hits Delta Plane Arriving in Sydney
Multiple passengers and crew were hurt when a Delta jet from LA to Sydney encountered significant turbulence Friday morning.
The flight, numbered 41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it touched down at the Sydney airport, a representative for the carrier stated. Four flight attendants were injured.
The New South Wales Ambulance Service stated they assessed a total of five people, and transferred three to a medical facility with non-life-threatening injuries that included spinal discomfort and head pain. Those affected spanned from their 30s up to the 70s.
This marks the most recent case of commercial jets being hit by severe turbulence, with aviation specialists saying that climate change is a key driver.
The aircraft was carrying 245 people and 15 crew members on the wide-body jet, the official added, adding that the plane landed "safely and normally" at Sydney Airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on the day in question.
The NSW Ambulance Service said they got a call just a mere three minutes before the plane touched down, and ambulances were waiting on the tarmac.

Estimates show that there are around five thousand cases of severe or worse turbulence every year, out of a total of in excess of 35 million journeys that are conducted worldwide.
Severe turbulence is defined as when the up and down movements of a plane going through disturbed air generate more than 1.5 times the force of gravity on your body - enough to throw you from your seat if you weren't wearing a restraint.
As climate change shifts weather patterns, researchers alert that flying could become bumpier: temperature changes and shifting wind patterns in the jet stream level are expected to boost the regularity and severity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
