Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
