SNAP Payments Expected to Expire for Over 40 Million Amid Ongoing US Government Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities stated this past weekend that monthly food benefits through a critical national welfare initiatives won't be issued next month due to the ongoing federal closure.

Impasse Persists Through Its Third Week

The federal closure lasted nearly a month as officials revealed the news, which followed calls from over 200 Democratic representatives asking the department to access emergency reserves to fund next month's benefits.

“The reality is, resources are exhausted,” officials announced. “At this time, there will be no benefits issued” beginning in November.

Millions Affected

Tens of millions of people depend on the regular assistance, per federal data. Some regions, including one southwestern state, use of the program is as high as 21% of residents.

Internal communications seen by a major news agency revealed that federal authorities would not access emergency reserves for the upcoming payments.

Political Stalemate

Lawmakers from both parties continue to disagree regarding how to finance and restart government operations.

A statement from the head of a prominent policy organization noted that the White House could have acted to act sooner to prevent benefits from running out.

“Officials were able and expected to made moves before now to make arrangements to access these resources,” the remarks concluded. “Conversely, it may choose not to use them in an effort to gain political advantage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to push upper chamber Democrats to approve a spending bill that would reopen government operations.

Local Responses

Governors in multiple regions declared states of emergency this week to allocate funds for hunger relief in anticipation of food benefits expiring in November.
