The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – But It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

An freshly coined initialism emerged several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, per insights from doctors including child health specialists. Typically, it is uncommon for physicians to attend to a child who has been bereaved of their complete family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors returning from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are continuing. Authorities has denied these accusations, just as it denies each claim it is accused of. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, apparently, is what unity looks like.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it once represented. A competition that was originally built on peace has transformed into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
