The Showrunner Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... For Now.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner See the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
